Our budding arachnologist

Today a cyber-friend posted a message for me, letting me know that her sons had found what they thought was a male black widow spider.  (She knew how much Jaden knows about and loves spiders!)  Her boys posted a picture of it on their blog and so I called Jaden in to show him the picture.  He immediately said, “No, no.  That’s not a black widow.  That’s a yellow garden orb weaver.”  Uhh… ok.  I, of course, have no clue, but as he began to sprew forth facts about the differences between one type of spider vs. the other, I chose to believe him.  He then wanted me to make sure that my cyber-friend (who has a spider phobia) knew that this particular spider was harmless – not poisonous – and that they didn’t need to be afraid of it.   You can read more about it and even see a picture of the spider by clicking here.   What do you think?  Is it a black widow or a yellow garden orb weaver?

About Anna

I've been married to my college sweetheart for 17 years and we've been in full or part time ministry ever since. I am a stay at home mom who homeschools our oldest son (11) while our youngest son (9) attends public school. Having adopted both our kids, we are big fans of adoption. My oldest has Asperger's Syndrome and my youngest has been diagnosed with a mood disorder, possibly bi-polar. I also have two long-haired dachshunds that I adore - Eli and Graham. I enjoy camping, watching movies, listening to and singing all types of music, and just spending time together with my precious family.

The photo of the male b.w. spider is about halfway down.  It looks just like the one the kids found.  (Jaden, I am still scared silly of spiders, but I want you to know that if I find them outside of my house I leave them alone!) :o )

About half way down is a photo of the yellow orb weaver – it’s labeled “Garden Spider”.   I can’t tell one spider from another though – I am definitely NOT a lover of spiders or anything related to them!  Eww… eeeewwwww!  The boys are slowly desensitizing me though…
